About the Author
Born in Great Britain, Tom Harding grew up in Canada, wrote for local newspapers as a teenager, then for college newspapers and creative literary publications while majoring in literature at university. Tom originally just kept a diary as he began his travels to Eastern Europe in search of a genuine serious life partner. As the trips extended over many years, and his meetings with internet girls became an incredible romantic roller-coaster ride, with seemingly endless ups and downs, the journal evolved into the novel which now contains all his experiences in the "Internet Girls Arena".

Internet Girls eBook Tom Harding Reviews

Author Thomas Harding sees us as falling into one or other of two categories we are hunters or we are gatherers. These terms have been regularly employed to describe humanity in its more primitive aspects but Harding finds good reason to corral them into use for a central part of his thesis.
If you are a "gatherer" - as I assume I am - you prefer the comforts of a familiar environment, you are uneasy in the marketplace of the sexes, once you've got one, you'd rather stick with her, and if you travel your inclination is to haul with you more books than you can possibly read, more medicines and toiletries than you will be called upon to use, and more phone numbers than you can dial - just in case. What we gatherers are best at is gathering a lifetime of junk.
Now the "hunter" - in which category I assume we can include Thomas Harding - lives more lightly on the surface of the earth, willingly or unwillingly not setting down roots, with no more worldly possessions than what he may carry on his back, trusting that instinct and past connections will guide him to a sleeping mat or a lover's arms.
A hunter may hunt many things but the subject of Thomas Harding's hunt is women, specifically the women who, until 1989, were sequestered behind an "iron curtain". Harding has traveled extensively throughout Russia, Belarus and the Ukraine in search of the lithe, flaxen-haired, blue-eyed beauties we only knew from black-and-white photos in grade six geography. But as we follow Harding on the hunt - we "gatherers" in our armchairs - it becomes apparent through his candid prose that he is not merely in search of women but in search of THE woman. Because our hunter, though he keeps himself fit, is no longer a young stud. Well, a stud he may be but time is working inexorably against him and ultimately Harding seems to be something of a romantic, dreaming of that woman with whom he can settle down and become - dare I say - a "gatherer".
The hunt has not been easy. Already Harding has wed two eastern European women - one of whom was refused entry by Immigration Canada because she had not been entirely honest in her health profile (in need of costly dialysis treatments); and the other who came to Canada, worked in Vancouver, got herself a new mouth of teeth with some help from Harding's inheritance, got her residency and dumped Thomas Harding.
Harding is remarkably sangfroid about these reverses. They are part of the cost - monetarily, emotionally and experientially - of the hunt. Throughout his narrative he is - as we are - buoyed by the hope that the next woman will be THE woman. Harding deludes neither himself nor his reader there is no free lunch. We meet Harding at the beginning of Internet Girls as something of an innocent, wading into a pool of willing nymphs...or so it seems...but as he quickly learns, the "hunter" is merely someone else's "prey". It had all seemed so easy, so straightforward. But these women have their own agendas, not to mention their own families who might also have their eyes on the hunter for their own reasons. Sometimes it looks like one of those old video games where your character has to run around disarming roaming dynamite kegs.
You may consider this as kind of a travel book. No, not so much about places, colors and cuisines - though Harding has moments of beauty and precision in his terse descriptions of gritty, factory-infested towns or sunsets over the frozen landscapes of St.Petersberg or the earthly, delectable flavors of the Ukrainian kitchen that can be had at the corner for a song. These images form the backdrop but they are not allowed to detract the hunter from the hunt.
The hunter is something of a lone wolf, speaking to like-minded souls in the interests of saving them some of the gaffs, the grief and the expenses that Harding has already incurred, whacking his way through the mangrove swamps of internet dating and marriage agencies without a guidebook like this one. There are many lessons to be learned by the neophyte. Harding stresses two at the outset. One, forget about trying to "surf" your way across the internet to that woman waiting for you on the steppes of eastern Europe - she's there, but you've got to be there too, physically present, feet on the ground. Two, start learning some Russian. It's still the lingua franca for all the former Soviet block countries from Kazakstan to Latvia. Harding is conversant in several languages and is, himself, a teacher of the finer nuances of the English tongue. Learning Russian was just another part of the equipment. And scattered throughout this more-than-entertaining book are many pieces of advice that the prospective hunter would ignore at his peril.
Before embarking upon the hunt more than one person may ask himself Why should I go through all this? Harding's been at for a long time and he's still out there hunting....This person obviously has yet to taste the flavor of the hunt. He's too fixed on bringing the hunt home. He's probably a gatherer at heart.

Internet Girls
Having been to Ukraine 5 times, staying for 16 months total and doing much of the same type of activity, I can say this book is very accurate in the description of what a foreigner will face when seeking to meet and form a relationship with Russian women today.
By and large, the women are all sharks looking for live fish to feed on, meaning you and your money, and they are quite skillful at getting money from you, mainly because Western men are easily suckered into giving away their funds when women ask for or demand it, not really knowing how to say "NO". Many times I have had women pick something up in a store and then expect you to pay for it, even when we had just met a few hours ago. They have no shame, and think money grows on trees where we come from and we get it for free and should give it to them without hesitation.
Russian people have a much different character than Western people do. They have no concept of "saving for a rainy day" or of saving for anything at all. I have seen many spend everything they had for a party, with no regard of what they will eat tomorrow, so they will also spend all you have if given the opportunity. And after all your money is gone or they realize they will get no more from you, you are as worthless to them as a used piece of toilet paper, and will be discarded promptly without a second thought.
The advice given in the book is quite good in many aspects. If a man is serious about trying to form a relationship with a Russian or Ukrainian lady, first learn the Russian language to a competent level so you can communicate with people there and understand what is happening around you, then go there and stay in one of the small to mid-sized towns and see what life and people are like there. You might get lucky and meet a decent, honest, down-to-earth lady, but don't hold your breath.
As far as the introduction agencies go, the information in the book accurately describes them. They are worse than a used-car salesman, and should not be used unless you are in the country and the agency can produce the person quickly. Do what the book says, and meet ladies in the office for the first meeting to see if there is any mutual feelings of attraction. Don't get used to pay for an expensive meeting in a fancy restaurant or bar, where you get a "thank you" (if that) and a tab for $200-$600. Happens all too often.
Searching for a Russian woman is fraught with peril for the average Western man. Overall, after all my time and money spent there, I would say "don't do it". But if you decide to do it, read this book carefully and heed the advice given.

Tom's account of his numerous trips into Eastern Europe, and his extended relationships and experiences with different women in various cities and countries gives an honest and realistic report on what this huge dating industry is really all about. As he says, it is possible to find a realistic woman amongst all the scammers, but you need to be aware of how complex and cunning this whole dating business has become over the past few decades.
Tom's book reads very smoothly from chapter to chapter, one experience and challenge after another, simply as a literary work of art also. Descriptions of places, seasons, people, and nature are all artistically described and make for a worthwhile read, whether or not you do in fact end up going or have been to this dating arena in Eastern Europe.
And if you've started to correspond with any women there, and are planning a trip for meeting women there, read it carefully from cover to cover, and pay close attention to every page.
From my own experience I found out in different countries including Southeast Asia that unfortunately this guy is speaking the truth. This guy kept failing for years because is hearts intention was not pure. he was convincing himself that he's looking for love but he was really looking for buying sex with his higher Capital value.
