This millennium spanning, galaxy crossing, epic story is full of fast moving action and thrilling intrigue. Star pilot Art King and navy engineer Yelena Kolowski are on the Most Wanted List for hijacking a tiny alien ship. Actually, the vessel has a mind of its own, although it has amnesia. The young couple and the ship are on the run from of the Empire, the most powerful and ruthless kingdom in human history. Far flung humanity is recovering from a plague virus, which drove artificial intelligence computers mad, made hyper flight travel impossible and left millions of worlds isolated. In the post-plague era, most people have an enduring fear of machine intelligence. So, an alien ship which can talk, think and make its own decisions is a frightening prospect. The Empire views the ship as a potential super weapon, as it can emerge from hyper flight directly above a planet, something no other vessel can do. The ship, itself, thinks its purpose is to save humanity, if only it could remember how. Art and Yelena travel from planet to planet trying to restore the ship’s memories and find the strange vessel’s home world. Meanwhile, the strange ship is not the only artefact left behind by the aliens. The survivors of a shipwrecked colony ship find a mysterious anomaly orbiting a planet and another on the surface. They have no idea what the grey floating ovals are for until a researcher falls into one and discovers a network of gateways, criss-crossing the galaxy. Means of Escape is the first volume of Spinward, an unputdownable trilogy of epic action, space opera adventure and galaxy spanning perspectives.

Means of Escape Spinward volume 1 Rupert Segar 9781499283815 Books

The title, Means of Escape, apparently refers to the star of the show, the small alien spacecraft that can do anything. It provides the means of escape several times for the small but tight knit group of humans who are it's crew and friends. The conflict is primarily between the good folks, our crew and ship, and the bad guys, the Empire. The tale spans huge amounts of time, but primarily deals with the current iteration of human controlled space and the unprecedented appearance of the first functioning alien artifact, the little ship. The Empire wants it and will do anything to get it, in order to figure out it's technology and rule even more of the galaxy.

The story shifts to another group of humans who are shipwrecked following the galaxy wide release of a virus that incapacitate all AI's, setting human space faring back thousands of years. These aliens discover gateways created by aliens a very long time ago and are able to once again explore the galaxy. The two "good" groups of human eventually meet and work together against the seemingly omnipotent Empire.

There is lots of action, no internal dialogue ala Weber, and the story develops at a breakneck pace.

This is a light, lively sci-fi adventure and a quick read.

Means of Escape Spinward volume 1 Rupert Segar 9781499283815 Books Reviews

Mr. Segars story is original and his universe is interesting. His characters are charming but lack depth. If not for the typos and misplaced words I would have given this one three and a half or four stars.
I liked this book because it included a smart A.I. that was very entertaining. At the same time, part of the A.I's memory has been lost and he is on a quest to find the purpose for why he was created in the first place. I recommend this book.
A good story of an intelligent ship trying to find its way in the galaxy with the help of a few humans. There are two other story lines that come together at the end. A good book to read if you want a fast paced story with a lot going on. There are some typos, but they are not too hard to figure out.
This is a pretty good read but I can't believe the high numbers of typo's and grammatical errors. should have some requirement for proofing books before posting for sale. If author's are going to self publish do yourself a favor and have "someone" PROOF your book.
Fun Read. The idea is there is a future that is not so bright, but there is hope. How we achieve the hope is the story. Moves along at a breakneck speed and it is clear there is another chapter or two that needs to follow. I really want to see the next book, so get cracking!
In all I enjoyed the book, sufficiently different to exist as a trilogy but searching for the title will bring up other authors with very similar book names.

As others have said, the book need to be proofed for spelling, but actually its a grammar issue since its frequently not the spelling, but the wrong word (probably caused by a spell checker). However, it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the story and was hoping the find the next book in the series.
This story had addictive elements, strangers becoming friends, then family, good vs evil, and The Ship. I loved how each character was introduced and the ones to become the core protagonist were written in such a way I found myself hoping they'd hook up with the previous characters. In each case I was rewarded in the manner in which the relationships evolved to where I wanted to care for the core and have them succeed. Then there was The Ship. I'm already a sucker for AI-ship stories, and this one did not disappoint at all. It too grew with the characters and became part of the family.

The author also had an interesting way of weaving multiple story elements and his pacing used tension well. There were several situations going on by the half way point of the book, and just when I invested in one situation, it switched to another one. It was nearly like mini-cliffhangers. You could hold on, and it was by no means frustrating, just shifting of gears. It was particularly satisfying when it all came together in the end.

While this could have easily been a one-off, this was certainly set up for a series and one I look forward to reading more of.
