I have had the privilege of serving as Pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Wurtemburg, Rhinebeck, New York for the past 14 years. And, I have lived in the historic 1870 Wurtemburg Parsonage since January 1, 2000. During this time, I have walked the cemeteries and studied the headstones. I have spent time alone in the church reading memorial plaques and culling through the well-ordered archives. I have spent many happy hours rummaging through the crevasses, corners, and cupboards of the old church seeking bits of information. I have also spent time listening to the stories and the recollections of lifelong members, as well as community leaders and local historians living in the Rhinebeck, New York area. During this time, I have sought "Verstehen," a deeper understanding of this special place, and of the people who lived, worshipped, and died here. Who were these people? And, why did they found, struggle, and support this special country church? This book is a humble record of my findings and discoveries. For the past several years, I have endeavored to assemble bits of information, dates, old photographs, stories, and maps attempting to weave this material into a coherent narrative, so that these precious memories might help current members gain a deeper appreciation of this remarkable 250-year-old congregation. I also hope that this work will contribute to the preservation of this material for future generations.

I purchased this book with the hope that there would be a list and photos of the graves in the cemetery. I have been tracing my family tree and it passes through Rhinebeck. Unfortunately it did not have what I was hoping for, but it was a fascinating read. The first chapters deal with why the German migration happened. I was an avid student of history in school, and this helped me put some facts together and learn some new things. The rest of the book deals with the history of the church itself and was very interesting to read about some of the whys and wherefors that went along with the history. It is also a history of the Lutheran Church. If you like history it is a good read. If you like local history it is great. There is a story about the one room school house that was half on the church property and half on a neighbors property, and he threatened to cut the school in half and get it off his property. Want to know what happened? Read the book! I have loaned it to another friend who is a geneologist and history buff, and have another who is patiently waiting her turn. It arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Thanks, even if it wasn't what I hoped for it is a great read.Product details

This is a very thorough book which is perfect for people with an interest in the history of this specific congregation,, or anyone wanting a perspective as to why so many Germans came to New York in the early 1700s.
