I'm thinking maybe the reason this is getting poorer reviews is because people don't know what to expect?
This is a retelling of the Grimm Fairytale, "The Goose Girl" for an m/m audience. It's written in a pretty straightforward way, like most fairy tales. It's pretty short. There is no sex and it's happily ever after for the protagonists and bloody death for the villains.
It's fairly well edited and typo free which is pretty rare for a free book.
I enjoyed it and was actually impressed that Ms. Derr remembered and was pretty faithful to the little know original story.

Prince Philip Degaré Hollis is in an awful situation When he was on his way to meet his fiancé Prince Adalwin Von Brant he was betrayed by his bodyguard Benoit, assaulted, cursed and left to die in a river. Luckily, he was rescued and now has to find a way to recover his place, which has been stolen by Benoit. A chance meeting with his fiancé gives him the chance to set his revenge in motion… But also to develop feelings for somebody he had just met in portrait and letters…
Two handsome princes, treachery, a curse, a race against time to stop a murderous plot and real love… Do you need something else? Of course, the lovers reunite at the end….
Not Derr at her best here; it's very short, the plot is quite predictable and a little trite, the characters are not well-realized and all of this is a real shame, since I've seen this same fairytale redone very successfully before, with Shannon Hale's The Goose Girl. I know how good this old fairytale can be, and I generally like Derr's work, but this time the combination isn't good. It's not worth bothering with. I'd recommend tons of her other work if you're looking for a gay fairytale, as well as other authors, but this one does not show off Derr's skill.
This was a lovely story about two princes overcoming betrayal and deceit to marry and be together. ) The only reason why I'm not giving it the full 5 stars is that I feel like it was solved in a rushed and slightly forced way? I know that the story is only 37 pages, but might have been better to write it longer and detail the reveal more. Still, I loved the concept and the writing as well.
Despite some relevant loopholes in logic, partly due to the Brothers Grimm's source, this short M/M fairy tale is a much better read than the rather pointless blurb can make one think.
The same blurb also fails to quote the source and that is kind of major when reworking a traditional fairytale.

That said, the story is nice with two likeable leads.
Prince Diggory is pleasantly down-to-earth; the author avoids the usual device of describing his humiliations as a high-born man forced to do menial jobs concentrating instead on his plot to win his birthright back.
There are no sex scene but the atmosphere becomes pleasantly sensual when the two princes interact.

More pages and a harsher hand in dealing with the source's inconsistencies would be needed to make a great work out of this nice little story.
This is a re-make of one of my favorite stories from when I was a little girl, (but I've read so many different versions I can't remember the name of the original classic) This however may be my favorite, and not just because this time its two princes and a soldier instead of a prince, a princess, and a maid. I enjoy how strong and tactical the cursed prince is, how the prince reveals the truth himself instead of the soldier giving himself away accidentally. Its a short read but still wonderful and worth several re-reads! This may even wind up being the version I read to my own son or daughter one day!
. . .that may or may not have included other writers' stories along with Ms. Derr's piece(s). Perhaps what other reviewers have been stating (actually, they were on the verge of COMPLAINING about ) is all too true has begun to cull, publish, and offer Megan Derr's short stories as novellas. Other writers are being handled and marketed in much the same vein as Ms. Derr, although it depends on the individuals themselves as to whether they can produce short-stories, go the distance with saga-like publications, or even complete a series of novels revolving around a common theme, location, or even a particular family.

I am irritated about these "new" books that are far from brand new pieces; in fact, I read The Stable Boy in late 2015, as either an additional bonus at the end of a novel or as one of a collection of short stories -- I don't exactly recall. The point is, it was not long enough to stand by itself in a book! It is still a very, very short story that might have been expanded, stretched, and developed further into a really amazing mystery filled with intrigue, better rounded and developed characters and a few more exciting sexual encounters between them. Diggory and Adalwin notwithstanding, Freddy and the King may have been an interesting side trip within a more complex novel with unlimited possibilities. As it stands, we have ourselves a really a short and expensive novella that, aside from having little to no typos, is exactly the same story I read before about two young princes who hope for a life filled with happiness, companionship, and eventual love, and instead face betrayal, deception, pain, heartache, a curse, and possible death. They can only overcome and prevail by accomplishing what is nearly impossible Diggory risks death if he speaks any of the truth directly to Adalwin, and Adalwin must put and show his trust in Diggory based purely upon blind faith and courage. Both had been spoiled, indulged and catered to their entire lives, and Diggory hadn't, up until recently, known betrayal, greed, or hate while Adalwin has also only recently been exposed to deceit and outright dishonesty, mostly believing he had been lied to by Diggory prior to actually meeting him, although Prince Adalwin had been unaware he had been dealing with Diggory's treacherous, impersonating bodyguard. When push comes to shove, both princes discover their greatest happiness and wildest dreams are within their reach if they simply choose to risk all on faith and trust in one another.
