Michael Horton’s highly anticipated The Christian Faith represents his magnum opus and will be viewed as one of―if not the―most important systematic theologies since Louis Berkhof wrote his in 1932. A prolific, award-winning author and theologian, Professor Horton views this volume as “doctrine that can be preached, experienced, and lived, as well as understood, clarified, and articulated.” It is written for a growing cast of pilgrims making their way together and will be especially welcomed by professors, pastors, students, and armchair theologians.Features of this volume include (1) a brief synopsis of biblical passages that inform a particular doctrine; (2) surveys of past and current theologies with contemporary emphasis on exegetical, philosophical, practical, and theological questions; (3) substantial interaction with various Christian movements within the Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodoxy traditions, as well as the hermeneutical issues raised by postmodernity; and (4) charts, sidebars, questions for discussion, and an extensive bibliography, divided into different entry levels and topics.

Dense with information, but not difficult to read. Horton writes well to make it easier to understand for those who aren't theologians or seminary students. It's a fine skill to be able to effectively communicate complex ideas and make it simpler and easier to understand.Product details

The Christian Faith A Systematic Theology for Pilgrims on the Way Michael Horton 9780310286042 Books Reviews
Michael Horton’s look at systematic theology is both extensive and well researched. He covers a wide variety of issues ranging from God, to humanity, and to the end times. In twenty-nine chapters and just under one-thousand pages, Horton depicts an accurate, detailed depiction of Reformed Systematic theology.
He displays a firm grasp of Christian teaching with a deep historical and biblical learning as well as being able to make his message simple enough for the entry level theology student. His focus is on a practical theology, one that helps us to understand ourselves, God, and His purpose in our lives. Accessibility alongside accuracy with an obvious depth and breadth of understanding Christian theology makes this volume enlightening and delightful for those who agree with his central positions.
Even for all of these praises, the book still does have its downfalls. His bias against certain sects of Christianity is glaringly obvious at times, lumping Armenians in alongside heretics and spending pages describing Reformed thought while giving a few sentences explaining the Catholic point of view. Naturally a systematic theology text written from a Reformed writer would have some Reformed bias in it; however it would be nice to see other points of view have their thoughts expressed clearly instead of having a sort of straw man being set up at times.
Overall, Horton clearly addresses the major topics of God, His nature and His energies, humanity, our broken state and our redemption, and the church, its mission in the world and its place in God’s kingdom. Through these main topics and several others, Michael Horton carefully, thoughtfully, and most importantly, successfully has crafted this text of systematic theology that is a highly recommended read for anyone wanting to impact the world for Christ or learn more about God and his purpose for the world.
I enjoyed the extensive effort to bring together Old and New Testament materials to demonstrate how the Bible makes sense.
I thought that sometimes I was wading through molasses to get the author's point of view. Heavy slogging!
Recommended to those seeking a grand vision of a remarkable author who knows his Bible.
Having been a 5 point Calvinist (Is there any other kind?) for several years I started investigating Reformed Theology. I started going to seminars (The Academy) at Christ Reformed Church in Anaheim on and off for the last couple of years. This church is headed by Dr. Kim Riddlebarger (a collegue of Michael Horton's and co-host of "The White Horse Inn"). As I started going to a Wednesday night function and Sunday mornings I started learning more about Reformed Theology. This Systematic Theology is a great resource for Christians to understand their faith from a Reformed perspective. Another book of Dr. Horton's I have found helpful would be "God of Promise" which is subtitled "An Introduction to Reformed Theology". Be warned though Coming from a normal evangelical background, reading these books will be a paradigm shift for you. You will look at the Triune God and how he deals with his people throughout history in a new and profound way. For Christians who are already Reformed this could be considered a worhy heir to Berkof's Systematic Theology written for today's believer. I'm not a professional theologian (nor do I play one on TV!), rather a "pilgrim in the pew" learning about my Lord, as I strive to be faithful (by the Holy Spirit) as I continue my journey to that city whose architect and builder is God.
Excellent update on Louis Berkhof's Systematic Theology. Loved the themes of overcoming estrangement, the stranger we never meet and meeting a stranger. Also the univocal- analogical contrast between man and God. The essence-energies method of explaining how God works is helpful. The best part is speech act theory - God acts toward creation and creatures through communication - the Word and words. One overused expression (ontic; ontology; ontological; ontologically) detracts from an otherwise very well written volume. I especially liked the parenthetical explanations and simplifications of the more difficult concepts - this really made for better comprehension by arm chair theologians - true pilgrims on the way.
Very good overview of prevalent theologies. A little difficult when the reader cannot find the point due to inconsistencies in writing/logic formula. However, if you get over the broad and somewhat erratic(I used this word because I could not find a better one, not negative in any way) conclusion building process, there is a lot to be found. Definitely take your time with this book.
A longer and more in depth than his PILGRIM THEOLOGY but worth every bit of time spent in it. We can, I think, never seek too examine too much theology in strengthening our understanding our ‘Lord and Christ’, as the apostle PETER said.
For those serious Christians who desire to learn more about their faith, this in-depth, systematic survey of the Doctrines of Faith will serve you well. This book is not casual reading but rather a serious theological study requiring perseverance. Michael Horton richly rewards the reader with Scriptural explanations establishing the Biblical foundations of why we believe what we believe, by incorporating the contextual historical development of many Church doctrines. Although written from the perspective of the Reformed tradition and organized as a textbook, it's Biblical structure will be of great spiritual profit for the Christian pastor, elder, seminary student and the serious laymen desirous of expanding their understanding of their faith. Horton will reward you on every page. This work will become a classic in Systematic Theology Studies. I highly recommend this work.
Dense with information, but not difficult to read. Horton writes well to make it easier to understand for those who aren't theologians or seminary students. It's a fine skill to be able to effectively communicate complex ideas and make it simpler and easier to understand.
