Training the Working Labrador The Complete Guide to Management and Training Jeremy Hunt 0011557013191 Books Reviews

First, the rating and the entire review ignores the actual title. I find it a bit misleading because it creates certain expectations which aren't quite right it's not a book about training and it's certainly not a book only for the working Labradors. I believe that the subtitle, "The Complete Guide to Management and Training", fits the contents of the book a bit better.

That being said, I strongly recommend this book for anyone that's planning to buy their first dog, especially if it's a Labrador. It has a wealth of information about the two Labrador types, for work and for show, and talks at length about picking a new pup. Yes, I know, every dog book has a chapter on picking the right dog, but this one is a bit more comprehensive and it describes several common illnesses specific to Labradors (e.g. hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, prcdPRA, CNM, EIC) and what kind of tests are available so you can buy a healthy pup. That chapter alone should make the book worth its price.

After that introduction, there are a couple of chapters that focus on managing a Labrador, from tips about picking up a kennel or how to use a crate to Jeremy Hunt's feeding routine (he has a sponsorship contract with Skinners, a UK-based dog food supplier) and there's a lot of talk about "achieving a connection". That might seem a bit too philosophical for a dog training book, but I think it's very appropriate in a world were trainers use a "heeling stick" or "force fetch" or e-collars to make a dog do what they want. Jeremy Hunt strongly believes that you should make your dog work with you, not for you and the result is fabulous.

One of the main ideas in the book and one of the most important reasons for the five star rating is setting expectations. It sounds a bit odd, but let me explain a lot of people, myself included, go online and see videos of fully trained (or "finished") dogs and they enjoy their style, their drive and want to get the same results with their dog. Up to a certain point, that's certainly possible, but few people realize the amount of money and time spent in order to get a dog to be such a well-oiled machine (picking the best lineage, working daily with the dog, gradually introducing new experiences in a very controlled environment and so on) and even fewer understand that they don't need such a dog. In a lot of cases, even so-called "working" retrievers are working just a few days every year and a lot of Labradors are mainly pets that spend a lot of time with the family. That's the kind of expectation one should have and it's a lot easier to train a dog if you know the end result.

The book does lack in information regarding the puppyhood. For example, it says nothing about house training a young dog. It's also not very helpful for somebody who owns a Labrador and lives in the city (the leash is introduced when the pup is around 5 months old which is OK if you can practice informal off-lead heeling in a large back yard with no distractions on a daily basis). Problems like jumping on people, mouthing or pulling aren't even mentioned in this book, but that's probably because a working Labrador usually stays in a kennel, not indoors. Also, there's nothing about recall which I do find a bit odd, fortunately there's another book, Pippa Mattinson's "Total Recall", which talks solely about this part of the training and has plenty of exercises that should proof the recall.

All in all, it's not a perfect book, but I do love it and I strongly recommend it for any new Labrador owner.
